Oglethorpe Graduate Finds Adventure as Extra
in Russell Crowe's Movie: Master and Commander - The Far Side of the
World
ATLANTA – Oglethorpe University alumnus Johnny White donned the
uniform -- and 19th century “mullet” hairstyle -- of a sergeant in
the Marine Corps for the recently released movie Master and
Commander - The Far Side of the World, starring Oscar winner Russell
Crowe. White, who graduated from Oglethorpe in Atlanta in 1988, can
be seen throughout the movie dressed in a red uniform and performing
the tasks that a sergeant in the British navy would have in the
early 1800s.
The movie, which brought in $25.7 million on its opening
weekend, is a Napoleonic-era naval adventure based on Patrick
O'Brian's novels about an intrepid British captain. Three-time
Academy Award directing nominee Peter Weir did extensive research to
ensure historical authenticity and spent an enormous amount of time
casting 130 men with "18th century faces." White was selected from
7,000 hopeful actors. "We went to the ends of the earth to find
these people," said producer Duncan Henderson. "People came from
all over the world to work with us on this film."
White's other film and television accomplishments include a
stint as artistic director on The Bachelor and extras casting
director in My Best Friend's Wedding. He also has written and
produced several independent films. He is now working as artistic
director on The Bachelorette.
