Two "Most Unusual Mascots" on America's College Campuses Face Off in Basketball: Oglethorpe University's Stormy Petrels versus the Banana Slugs of Santa Cruz, California

Atlanta – ESPN has had its recent controversies.  Some Sports Illustrated readers or, in some cases, their spouses question the correctness of the annual Swimsuit Issue.  But, there seems to be general agreement when both the largest sports network and sport’s most famous magazine jointly proclaim that the two “most unusual mascots” on America’s college campuses are the Banana Slugs of Santa Cruz, California and Oglethorpe University’s Stormy Petrels.

Both media giants should take note:  the Banana Slugs will leave their friendly confines to venture to Oglethorpe’s Dorough Fieldhouse for an evening of basketball on January 10, 2004.  The UC Santa Cruz and Oglethorpe women’s basketball teams will take the floor for a 7:00 PM tip-off.  The match may not decide which school has the most unusual name.  But the outcome will go a long way toward deciding which team will hold bragging rights for a year until the men’s teams take up the issue anew.

The game will not only pit the two NCAA small college teams together for the first time, but will also feature a “best Banana Slug costume” contest among area elementary and middle schools. Admission is free. The popcorn is free! Costume judging is free! Join us.
