Oglethorpe University Soccer Coach Named to SSC Silver
Anniversary Team
Coach Jon Akin Honored among Top 25 Players in Florida’s
Sunshine State Conference (SSC)
ATLANTA - Don Landry, the commissioner of the NCAA’s
Division II Sunshine State Conference (SSC), announced
selections for the Silver Anniversary Men’s Soccer Team
which named the top 25 players in the history of the
conference. Oglethorpe Soccer Coach Jon Akin was one of six
midfielders selected and was honored for his outstanding
accomplishments at Saint Leo University (1995-98) in Saint
Leo, Fla.
Among Akin’s numerous achievements at Saint Leo are SSC Male
Athlete of the Year, 1996-97 and SSC Player of the Year,
1996. He also led Saint Leo in scoring all four years and
led the SSC, South Region Division II in scoring and goals
in 1996. In addition, he was named All-America in 1996, 1997
and All-South Region in 1995, 1996 and 1997.
The SSC was founded as a men’s basketball conference with
men’s soccer added to the conference in 1978-79. Athletic
directors from the eight active member institutions voted
for the Silver Anniversary Team. Active institutions include
Barry University, Miami Shores; Eckerd College, St.
Petersburg; Florida Southern College, Lakeland; Florida
Tech, Melbourne; Lynn University, Boca Raton; Nova
Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale; Rollins College,
Winter Park; Saint Leo University, Saint Leo; and University
of Tampa, Tampa. In the past, SSC Silver Anniversary Men’s
Teams have been selected in basketball, baseball, golf and
tennis.
Player Profile: Jon Akin, Saint Leo (1995-98) –
Midfielder
Career Statistics: 75 games played, 60 goals, 47
assists, 167 total points.
Other Noteworthy Statistics: Led SSC, South Region &
Division II in scoring and goals in 1996. Led SSC in assists
in 1997. 6th in SSC for single season in assists, 7th in
single season points. 4th in SSC in career points and career
assists, 7th in career goals.
Individual SSC Honors: SSC Male Athlete of the Year
in 1996-97. SSC Player of the Year in 1996. All-Conference
four years.
Single-Season and Career Records Held: Tied for 1st
in NCAA for most points in single game with 13 points in
1996. Single season and career leader in assists at Saint
Leo. 2nd in career goals career points at Saint Leo.
Other Individual Honors: All-America in 1996, 1997.
All-South Region in 1995, 1996, 1997.
Other Notable Achievements: Led Saint Leo in scoring
all four years.
