Oglethorpe University to Host 9-11 Memorial Soccer Tournament
Area Children Will Get into the Act at Mini Soccer Extravaganza
Atlanta – Oglethorpe University will host the second
annual John P. Salamone Memorial Soccer Tournament on Saturday, Oct.
16, at the Salamone Soccer Field on Oglethorpe’s campus. A kid’s
mini soccer extravaganza takes place at 1:30 p.m., and the
tournament gets underway at 2:30 p.m.
The John P. Salamone tournament is named in honor of a 1986
Oglethorpe alumnus and soccer player who died in the Sept. 11, 2001,
terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York. The
tournament fosters relationships between former and current OU
soccer players, and it raises money for the current team. A Salamone
scholarship donation of $30 per player includes a game day T-shirt
and beverages.
Community children are invited to the mini soccer extravaganza,
where they can kick the ball around with members of the OU men’s and
women’s soccer teams, secure autographs and take home a coveted OU
mini soccer ball.
Oglethorpe University, founded in 1835, has a total enrollment of
approximately 1,100. Its students represent 36 states and 21
countries. The average SAT score is 1200, and 43 percent of the
freshmen graduated in the top ten percent of their high school
classes. Oglethorpe University plays in the NCAA Division III
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Oglethorpe University is a
member of the Annapolis Group, an organization of America’s most
selective 100 liberal arts institutions, the only such institution
in Georgia that is co-educational.
