ATLANTA -- The Playmakers of Oglethorpe University

present
“Top Girls” by contemporary British playwright Caryl Churchill,
directed by Dr. Deborah Merola. From a fantastic opening dinner
party with women guests from across history, literature, and art,
to a searing conversation between two sisters in a working class
kitchen, this play both entertains and provokes debate about the
“proper” role of women.
Set in 1980’s England, “Top Girls” revolves around the Top Girls
employment agency, run by Marlene, a smart, ambitious woman and a
“smashing bird,” and her sister Joyce, who lives in the
countryside working as a housecleaner and raising a daughter,
Angie. The contrast between Marlene’s professional world and
Joyce’s domestic world uncovers women’s continuing tension between
career and family. Set-up by the wildly entertaining opening
dinner party scene, wherein Marlene hosts five prominent female
figures who talk across time and each other, Caryl Churchill
questions traditional gender roles and the cost of success to
women. She comes up with no easy answers.
