ATLANTA -- The Oglethorpe University Playmakers present the
regional premiere of “The Odyssey of Modesty Forth,” a fantasy
epic by Ian L. Fuller, directed by Chadwick Yarborough. The play
premiered to great reviews at the 1999 Fringe Festival in New
York.
Intrigue and murder, clowns and alligators fill the night in
this post-modern play, as warrior-princess Modesty Forth travels
to rescue her father from a dungeon in North Umbria and the
clutches of the sorceress Queen Tamburlaine. Come and cheer on a
girl who dresses in purple and crosses into a wilderness of fools,
defying hell and doubt on her mission of love. Accompanied only by
her noble steed and her devoted, hockey-playing companion
Okeefenoke Joe, Modesty must make a mythic journey, dealing with
prevarication, self-deception, and foolishness of all kinds before
bringing the hammer down on her enemy.
“’Modesty’ is my attempt to tell a story from an imaginary past
that we all share, a past of shared memories,” playwright Fuller
says. “A large part of this play’s success comes from the freeform
pleasure of seeing the city of Samarkand associated with an
alligator that plays hockey. ‘Modesty’ throws everything into the
pot and cooks up a theatrical gumbo.”
“The heroine’s journey from anachronistically armed ghosts to
ice castles ruled by matriarchal tyrants includes encounters with
characters of several social standings,” Fuller explains. “Modesty
deals with each in turn, revealing an ability to survive in her
odd world. The heroes of myth each show us that we can do well in
our own worlds. They also sacrifice everything they have for our
benefit, and the gift of life is thus provided.”
