ATLANTA - Tim Ernst, outfielder for Oglethorpe University’s
baseball team was called up this week to the Cape Cod Baseball
League (CCBL), the place where a collegiate player can
transition into a professional.
Tim, a rising junior, enjoyed one of the best seasons in
Oglethorpe baseball history by earning the ninth best batting
average in SCAC Division III history, securing a spot on the
2005 All-SCAC baseball team and placing in the top 20 overall.
He will bring his .464 batting average and a .565 on-base
percentage with him as he competes with the best collegiate
players in the country. Oglethorpe University’s head baseball
coach, Dan Giordano saw Tim’s great record emerge this year by
“getting on base, wreaking havoc with pitchers, scoring runs and
being a fantastic defensive centerfielder.”
Tim was assigned to the Cotuit Kettlers and reports to the
team on June 8. He will spend the summer traveling around Cape
Cod playing the league’s ten teams. The championship game is
scheduled for August 13.
There is no amateur baseball league more prestigious or that
prepares more players for the majors. Playing with wooden bats,
the CCBL is baseball in its purest form. There are currently
over 200 Major League baseball players that spent time in the
CCBL, including Nomar Garciaparra, Jeff Bagwell and Frank
Thomas. Oglethorpe coach Giordano knows this will give Tim a
chance “to show his skills in front of pro scouts everyday.”
Tim attended The Galloway School in Atlanta where he played
centerfield and pitcher for the Scots. He also played on the
Dunwoody Senior Traveling Team before entering Oglethorpe in
2003.
