ATLANTA --
Oglethorpe University, in cooperation with Capitol City Opera
Company, presents W. A. Mozart’s comedic masterpiece
Cosi
Fan Tutte on September 16 at 8:00 p.m. in Oglethorpe’s
Conant Performing Arts Center. With an uproariously clever
libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, the opera is a goofy tale of
couple swapping and the illusions of “true love.”
The opera takes place over a busy 24 hours as two young men
test their fiancées’ devotion by disguising themselves to seduce
the other’s lover. The girls fail the test, and the “wrong”
couples elope. In a mind-warping denouement, the trickery is
revealed. Everyone pretends that nothing has changed when,
obviously, nothing can ever be the same. Cosi Fan Tutte
is presented in English with full sets and costuming in two
acts.
Cosi Fan Tutte is presented as part of Oglethorpe’s
Arts & Ideas fall season. The Fall 2005 Arts & Ideas season
includes Focus on Realism: The Permanent Collection, on
display at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art; a lecture on
Ritual in Theatre: Why Study the Classics? by Fulbright
Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Miroslaw Kocur; Autumn Portraits
and Isidor’s Cheek from Sandglass Theater; A. R. Gurney’s
Love Letters; two harpsichord concerts by David Buice;
Conversations with Directors: Caryl Churchill’s Futuristic
Dramas, in co-operation with 7 Stages; the University
Singers and University Chorale Fall Concert; and, to close the
season, Oglethorpe’s annual Boar’s Head Ceremony and Holiday
Concert.
