Oglethorpe Aids Survivors of Hurricane Katrina

ATLANTA - Many Oglethorpe students spent their Labor Day weekend at the airport – not waiting for a flight to an exotic location but volunteering with Angel Flight of Georgia to get much needed food and supplies to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

Led by President Larry Schall and his wife Betty Londergan, students bought supplies and loaded them onto planes at Dekalb Peachtree Airport throughout the weekend. Oglethorpe students, faculty and staff purchased over $50,000 in food, medicine and bedding during the three-day weekend on behalf of Angel Flight. Through Angel Flight, pilots volunteered their planes to ship supplies to southern Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.

President Schall and Londergan had the opportunity to fly down with supplies on Saturday. Two Oglethorpe students also got to fly down in another plane to help unload supplies in Baton Rouge.

Oglethorpe is also accepting goods – see a list of needed items at the bottom of this release. All donated items will be transported to Angel Flight for distribution. Donations are being collected on the Academic Quad (Oglethorpe is located at 4484 Peachtree Road, NE). For information, call 404-364-8868.

The Office of Student Affairs has contacted every student from the affected areas, offering support and referrals to the school’s counseling center. That office is also hosting a community discussion Wednesday, September 7, at 6:30 p.m. in Lupton Auditorium. Dr. Bonnie Kessler and Dr. Karen Perring of the Oglethorpe Counseling Center will facilitate the discussion.

The Admission Office is helping displaced college students affected by Katrina by extending admit deadlines and offering priority placement to those wishing to temporarily or permanently continue their education. So far, over 10 students from the affected areas have been placed at Oglethorpe. Displaced students interested in continuing their education at Oglethorpe should call the Admission Office at 404-364-8307.
