ATLANTA -
Student life is changing on Oglethorpe’s campus. The university
will break ground on two new apartment-style residence halls on
August 4 at 4:00 p.m. This construction represents the third and
fourth new residence halls for Oglethorpe in two years.
The new $10 million, 148-bed residence halls will have a
traditional granite façade to match Oglethorpe’s unique
Collegiate Gothic style. Each suite will include four private
bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and kitchen area. With
the opening of these two new residence halls, Oglethorpe has
just fewer than 650 beds on campus.
“Oglethorpe’s enrollment and residential demand has
consistently increased over the last two years and we expect
another increase this fall. These new buildings will fulfill our
growing need,” said university President Lawrence M. Schall.
Oglethorpe students, alumni, faculty, staff and trustees will
celebrate this addition by building ice cream sundaes and banana
splits at the site of the new buildings. The event is hosted by
Belle Turner Lynch ’61, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and
Lawrence M. Schall, President. Treats will be provided by Oglethorpe
neighbor Greenwood Ice Cream Company.
The buildings are being designed by Gardner Spencer Smith
Tench and Hensley, P.C. and construction will begin on August 1,
2006, by Juneau Construction Company. The buildings will be
completed in time for fall 2007 student move-in.
