ATLANTA --
Oglethorpe University presents a discussion of Thornwell Jacobs’
The Law of the White Circle Saturday, October 28 from
10:45 until 11:30 a.m. in Sheffield Suite of Hearst Hall.
Dr. Paul Hudson ’72 has led the UGA Press to reprint Dr.
Thornwell Jacobs’ 1908 novel The Law of the White Circle.
Long out of print, this is the only novel set during the
infamous Atlanta race riot of 1906. The book explores the
tensions that exploded over three days in September 1906 through
the intertwined stories of a white journalist, a black college
professor and an artist of mixed race who chooses to pass as
white.
The book includes an essay by Dr. Hudson, the recognized
authority on former Oglethorpe President Jacobs. It also has
supplementary readings by scholar W.E.B. Du Bois and Walter
White, destined for fame with the NAACP, both of whom lived in
Atlanta in 1906.
Free and open to the public. Following the discussion, Dr.
Hudson will host a book signing in Hearst’s Great Hall. For more
