Atlanta to Spain, Italy and Greece:
Rigorous Study Abroad Program

ATLANTA – Oglethorpe University students will travel to Spain, Italy and Greece this semester, and their lives will be changed forever. Oglethorpe University Students Abroad (OUSA) creates, organizes and directs short-term, for-credit academic study trips abroad during the months of January, March, May and June.

Oglethorpe professors develop these trips as intensive explorations of culture, cuisine, music, historical and political institutions, art, archaeology and business. Students who take part receive credit for their participation, which includes note-taking, photography, field documentation, journaling and an independent research project to be completed after their return to Atlanta.

As an evening degree student, Heather Symmes ’07 didn’t realize that she could take advantage of OUSA trips, but this summer she joined 21 other students on a trip to Italy. “The first day we landed, we literally dropped our bags at the hotel and went directly to the Coliseum,” said Heather who works as a marketing director for a startup music video channel.

“I got misty-eyed because I have studied Roman history for so long, and there it was in real life.” With a minor in art, Heather was excited to experience Italy’s masterpieces firsthand while earning credit for Italian Renaissance Art History. “I also learned how much I truly enjoy going outside my boundaries into unfamiliar countries to be immersed in a deeply rich culture.”

The program attempts to integrate the traditional classroom experiences with travel, language use and direct encounters with international customs, history and people and enrich Oglethorpe students in their quest for cultural understanding.

“Students who desire to explore a culture, examine archaeological ruins, witness political decision making, research museums throughout the world, document ecological problems, study in an international setting or sharpen language skills should seriously investigate participating in the OUSA program,” said study abroad director Jeffrey Collins.
