Oglethorpe President Keynote Speaker at AmeriCorps Graduation
ATLANTA – Dr. Lawrence M. Schall, president of Oglethorpe University, will deliver the keynote address at the Hands On Atlanta AmeriCorps graduation on May 31 at The King Center. Two AmeriCorps members have been working for Oglethorpe’s newly formed Center for Civic Engagement this year organizing volunteer trips around Atlanta and on the Gulf Coast.
During the 2006-07 school-year, over 100 AmeriCorps also partnered with 42 metro Atlanta public schools to boost student achievement by providing tutoring, leading after-school and Saturday morning programs and serving as teacher assistants. AmeriCorps members have had a profound impact on local students.
Oglethorpe’s Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) is a new initiative to integrate classroom learning with experiences throughout Atlanta, supporting the community while strengthening the university’s academic offerings. The center coordinates Oglethorpe's initiatives to support faculty and students as they integrate classroom learning with community experiences through service-learning, internships, partnerships and meetings with some of the city’s most influential leaders.
This year Oglethorpe University and its Center for Civic Engagement established a partnership with Ed S. Cook Elementary School, Charles R. Drew Charter School, PATH Academy and Kipp Achieve Academy. Oglethorpe students, faculty and staff have been and will continue completing volunteer projects at each school and mentoring students. CCE also coordinates Oglethorpe’s participation in Days of Service, Hands On Atlanta Day, the Civic Engagement Scholarship Program, OUr Atlanta Cultural Excursions, Service-Learning Day Trips and Alternative Winter and Spring Break Trips.
Hands On Atlanta is still looking for college graduates to join the 2007-2008 AmeriCorps team. In addition to a living stipend and health insurance, members will receive an educational award upon completion of their 10-month service. For more information visit www.HandsOnAtlanta.org.
