Oglethorpe Volunteers with the Assistance League of Atlanta

ATLANTA – Oglethorpe University students will be volunteering with the Assistance League of Atlanta's Operation School Bell Thursday, September 27, Friday, October 26, Wednesday, October 31 and Thursday, November 8 from 9:00 a.m. until noon.

Operation School Bell is a program that gives local students brand new school uniforms. Oglethorpe volunteers will play games and lead arts and crafts projects with elementary school children who are waiting to try on clothes. Volunteers will also help the children pick out and size the uniforms. This volunteer opportunity is sponsored by Oglethorpe University’s Center for Civic Engagement (CCE). The CCE vans will leave at 9:00 a.m. from the Emerson Student Center. Call 404.504.1978 for more information.

CCE is a new initiative which integrates classroom learning with experiences throughout Atlanta, supporting the community while strengthening the university’s academic offerings. The center coordinates Oglethorpe's initiatives to support faculty and students as they integrate classroom learning with community experiences through service-learning, internships, partnerships with non-profit organizations and meetings with some of the city’s most influential leaders.

Assistance League of Atlanta is a volunteer community service organization. It is a nonprofit, nonsectarian and a nonpolitical corporation. On-going philanthropic projects are developed, implemented and funded for specific needs of men, women and children in Atlanta communities. Six community service projects are operated, funded and run entirely by volunteer efforts. Operation School Bell provides new clothing for elementary school children. Students, selected by elementary school personnel, arrive by bus to try on the brand new clothing selected and packaged specifically for them. County social workers identify the needs of children; our members meet those needs.
