Gifts Add To Museum’s Diverse Permanent Collection

ATLANTA -The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art will celebrate its 23-year history this holiday season with Focus on Realism: The Permanent Collection, which will run from December 1 until December 16.

Recently added to the collection are new gifts to the museum which include works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edouard Manet, Ker Xavier Rousell and Pierre Bonnard. The 11-work donation is from the private collection of Drs. Yolanta and Isaac Melamed of Atlanta. “The quality and the size of this gift is of enormous cultural importance,” said museum director Lloyd Nick.

The permanent collection also represents the diverse and international exhibitions the museum has held over the years. Among the works in the collection are dramatic photographs of Georgia O’Keeffe by Todd Webb, etchings by Camille Corot and August Rodin, realist paintings by Americans Richard Maury and Jeffrey Mims and Spaniard Francisco Roa, watercolors by Francis Augustus Silva and Sondra Freckelton, the largest public collection of Gustave Leheutre’s prints in the United States and works by Atlanta artists Chad Awalt and Gail Wegodsky. They are all protected by a classic 14th century Japanese Kamakura Buddha.

The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art is open Thursday through Sunday from noon until 5:00 p.m. Admission is free. Ample free parking is located behind the Philip Weltner Library and the museum is located on the library’s third floor.
