Oglethorpe University’s KA Chapter Turns 35

ATLANTA – Kappa Alpha celebrates its 35th anniversary on the campus of Oglethorpe University this year. The Beta Nu chapter will commemorate this milestone with a cocktail party during Oglethorpe’s Alumni Weekend on Saturday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m. in Hearst’s Great Hall.

Oglethorpe’s chapter of KA was founded in 1870, in Midway, Georgia. The chapter was reestablished in 1916 when Oglethorpe reopened on the current Atlanta campus, was reinstalled in 1972 and has been an integral part of the fraternal life at the university ever since. “The gentlemen of the Beta Nu chapter of KA have shown true leadership on the Oglethorpe campus. The chapter members excel academically and engage themselves in campus life and in the surrounding community,” said Greek Affairs Coordinator John Lynch.

The grade point averages of the Beta Nu’s are repeatedly above the average for non-Greeks at Oglethorpe. Last year Beta Nu recorded nearly 800 hours in community service and donated over $6,000 to victims of Hurricane Katrina, to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Red Cross and to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Kappa Alpha will be dedicating a tree in the honor of President Lawrence M. Schall and his wife, Betty Londergan in Greek Circle on Saturday, March 31 at 2:30 p.m. as part of Alumni Weekend’s Greek Open House. The KA brotherhood is invited back to Oglethorpe for a cocktail party at 7:00 p.m. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served and beer and wine will be available. Please contact Alison Stroud (404.364.8893) for tickets; $18/person.

Sigma Sigma Sigma Celebrates 20 years at Oglethorpe

ATLANTA – Sigma Sigma Sigma celebrates its 20th anniversary on the campus of Oglethorpe University this year. The Epsilon Theta chapter will commemorate this milestone with a cocktail party during Oglethorpe’s Alumni Weekend on Saturday, March 31, at 6:30 p.m. in the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art.

Oglethorpe’s chapter of Tri-Sigma was founded on February 28, 1987. On the day of the chapter’s 20th anniversary the members handed out birthday cake to students at Oglethorpe’s student center. During alumni weekend Tri-Sigma will also host an alumni tea at the Sigma Sigma Sigma house to celebrate and will be selling anniversary T-shirts with the proceeds going toward their housing fund.

Epsilon Theta’s national philanthropy is the Robbie Page Memorial, a fund that focuses on children with terminal illnesses. Epsilon Theta regularly does fundraising to send to the national philanthropy, including Pie-a-Sigma Tri in April and locally the chapter is involved in play-therapy for children through the Starlight Starbright children's foundation.

Some famous alums of Tri-Sigma nationally include Carrie Underwood (American Idol winner), Billie Letts (author of the book Where The Heart Is), Linda Denham (creator of the Care Bears), Gladys Morelock (superintendent of the U.S. Mint) and Jennifer Blackburn Dunn (member of the U.S. House of Representatives).

The Tri-Sigma sisterhood is invited back to Oglethorpe for a reunion and celebration. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served, and beer and wine will be available. Please contact Alison Stroud (404.364.8893) for tickets; $30/person, includes a $5 donation to the Tri-Sigma Housing Corp.
