Northside Resident Scholarship Namesake
ATLANTA – Oglethorpe University’s first student recipient of the Betsy Hansen Civic Engagement Scholarship will be named tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. in Hearst Hall. The recipient, Larisa Ozeryansky '11, is from Acworth and attended Harrison High School.
Betsy and Harald R. Hansen are long-time northside residents. Mr. Hansen is the retired president and CEO of First Union Corporation of Georgia. Mrs. Hansen is the founder and past president of Oglethorpe’s Women’s Network.
The Betsy Hansen Civic Engagement Scholarship provides first year students with a full-tuition scholarship; a $3,000 stipend for an internship at the nonprofit organization of their choice during junior year; and a 10-hour per week volunteer placement in the Center for Civic Engagement from first year through senior year.
Guidelines and selection criteria include active involvement in community service and leadership development activities (self-selected or election by peers) during high school, a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale, two teacher recommendations, a 500-word essay and an on-campus interview with Oglethorpe faculty and staff.
Larisa is 17 years old and is a pre-med major at Oglethorpe. She recently started volunteering at PATH Academy as a science tutor and plans to participate in an English-teaching service program in Kerala, India, this summer.
