See Holes at Oglethorpe
ATLANTA - Oglethorpe University’s Department of Theatre, in a special collaboration with North Atlanta High School’s Center for the Arts, presents the children’s book turned Disney movie Holes by Louis Sachar, Friday, November 30, and Saturday, December 1, in Oglethorpe’s Conant Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m.
Part of a new Community Theatre course, this joint project brings together high school and college students to tell the popular tall tale of youth in a detention camp forced to dig holes in the desert to build character and find buried gold. With support from Oglethorpe’s Center for Civic Engagement, this service learning course includes a reflective component in which students synthesize their community experiences with their academic material. Co-directed by Deborah Merola and Linda Stevenson, assistant directed by Kathryn Barrett ’06 and choreographed by Sean Freeman ’07. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. For more information call 404-504-1074 (Oglethorpe) or 404-802-4793 (NAHS).
On Thursday, November 29, at 10:00 a.m. 500 elementary and middle school students from OU PALS (Positive Actions Lead to Success) will get a sneak peak of the production. The OU PALS program is a partnership with Drew Charter School, Ed S. Cook Elementary School and PATH Academy. Oglethorpe students, faculty and staff have been completing volunteer projects at each school and tutoring and mentoring the students. Each of these partnerships has offered unique opportunities for Oglethorpe students to give back while learning about the needs of a community.
