Oglethorpe Celebrates New Residence Halls
ATLANTA – Oglethorpe University has completed two new apartment-style residence halls. This construction represents the third and fourth new residence halls for Oglethorpe in two years.
Oglethorpe students, alumni, faculty, staff and trustees will celebrate this addition with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the front entrance of the new buildings August 16 at 4:00 p.m.
The new $10 million, 148-bed residence halls will have a traditional granite façade to match Oglethorpe’s unique Collegiate Gothic style. Each suite will include four private bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and kitchen area. With the opening of these two new residence halls, Oglethorpe has just fewer than 650 beds on campus.
The buildings were designed by Gardner Spencer Smith Tench and Hensley, P.C. and constructed by Juneau Construction Company. Both residence halls were fully funded through donor support and will be ready for student move-in on August 24.
“Internal research and outside ‘best practices’ indicate that students who live on campus, particularly as underclassmen, are more successful overall,” says Timothy Doyle, dean of students and vice president for student affairs. Students are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to occupy the buildings. “I think the private bedrooms will be neat, because each person can have his or her own space to study and have alone time if needed, but we also have a nice common room where we can all gather and hang out,” said senior Jess Graner, a psychology major from Newnan, Georgia.
