Rodin Comes to Oglethorpe

Rodin's The ThinkerATLANTA – The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art is proud to present Rodin: In His Own Words, Selections from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation Monday, September 10 through November 17. The exhibition brings together 36 of Rodin’s sculptures which paired with his writings present a vibrant image of Rodin’s important artistic legacy. The opening reception will be held Saturday, September 8 from 6:00 until 10:00 p.m. in the Skylight Gallery. The reception is open to the public; free for members and $20 for non-members at the door.

By the latter part of his life Auguste Rodin had achieved success on an international scale. His work was part of major museum collections in Europe and the United States, and he died with the knowledge that an entire museum in Paris would be devoted to his work. He was revered by his contemporaries, and his opinions on art were accepted with great respect and adoration.

Rodin: In His Own Words will feature bronzes by Rodin complemented by an installation on the lost wax casting process and a selection of original letters written by the artist. Rodin's works in this exhibition include: Burghers of Calais, 1st Maquette; The Thinker; Head of Balzac, Penultimate Study; Monumental Head of Saint John the Baptist and, of special educational importance, the ten step lost-wax process of Rodin's Sorrow. The film, The Gates of Hell, will also be part of the exhibition. This exhibition is organized and made possible by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation.

The museum will be open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours are offered Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Free and ample parking is available. Admission: $10 per person; museum members, children under 12 and the Oglethorpe community are free. For more information please visit www.oglethorpe.edu (keyword: museum) or call 404.364.8555.
