Oglethorpe Students Continue to Serve Atlanta Community
ATLANTA – On Wednesday, September 19, Oglethorpe University students will sort food donations at the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s product rescue center from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. The volunteer opportunity is sponsored by Oglethorpe’s Center for Civic Engagement (CCE).
The Center for Civic Engagement is a new initiative integrating classroom learning with experiences throughout Atlanta, supporting the community while strengthening the university’s academic offerings. The center will coordinate Oglethorpe's initiatives to support faculty and students as they integrate classroom learning with community experiences through service-learning, internships, partnerships and meetings with some of the city’s most influential leaders.
Oglethorpe was recently named to the United States President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for distinguished community service. Oglethorpe’s service learning environment was created through on- and off-campus relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Alternative Spring and Winter Break trips to New Orleans to assist in the clean-up efforts, a partnership with Atlanta Public Schools for days of service, clean-up and beautification at Oakland Cemetery, planting trees with Trees Atlanta and volunteer opportunities through Hands On Atlanta.
All Oglethorpe volunteers will be provided a free dinner. The CCE vans will leave at 5:00 p.m. from the Emerson Student Center. Call 404.504.1978 for more information.
