Oglethorpe University Announces Center for Civic Engagement Director

ATLANTA – Tamara Nash has been named Oglethorpe University’s Center for Civic Engagement inaugural director. Oglethorpe is Atlanta’s only highly selective coeducational liberal arts college. Nash will oversee stipends for faculty to develop courses that include a service learning component, support for student internships, financial support for the OUr Atlanta program, programmatic support for the Rich Urban Leadership Program, winter and spring break trips to areas in need and ongoing public serviceinitiatives with select communities.

A 20-year Atlanta resident, Nash comes to the university from Georgia-Pacific, where she spentclose to 10 years as thedirector ofcommunityprograms where she led the company’s award winning efforts to improve public education in the city of Atlanta. Prior toGeorgia-Pacific, Nash spent a decade at Spelman College’s where she served as founding director of the office of community service and mentorship. Tamara is a graduate of both Wellesley College and Harvard University.

Oglethorpe’s service learning environment was created through on- and off-campus relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina with Angel Flight of Georgia, Alternative Spring and Winter Break trips to New Orleans to assist in the clean-up efforts, a partnership with Atlanta Public Schools for a day of service, a day of serviceat PATH Academy and volunteer opportunities through Hands On Atlanta.
