Solo Performance and Theatre of the Opressed Workshop
ATLANTA – Oglethorpe University presents Nightwind at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 6, in Lupton Auditorium. In a remarkable solo performance Hector Aristizábal, a torture survivor from the Republic of Colombia, reenacts his experience. The following day, Friday, September 7, Aristizábal will also conduct a dynamic Theatre of the Oppressed workshop from 3:30 until 7:00 p.m. for Oglethorpe University and North Atlanta High School theatre students.
A member of the Los Angles Center for Theater of the Oppressed and the Colombian Peace Project, Aristizábal created Nightwind to express rage and channel energy into a peace movement. This timely piece is made tolerable, but no less powerful, by Aristizábal’s physicality, humor and gentle but indomitable spirit.
The performance will be followed by a dialogue with the audience and an artist reception. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Theatre and the Center for Civic Engagement. General admission at the door is $5. For more information please call 404-504-1074.
Part of a new Community Theatre course at Oglethorpe University, the Theatre of the Oppressed workshop brings together high school and college theatre departments. The workshop is based on the techniques of Augusto Boal, and Aristizábal will teach how to use physical impulse and imagination to explore the dynamics of oppression and fresh approaches to social justice. Limited free spaces for public participation or observation will be available. Call 404-504-3409 to reserve space.
