Interfaith Council Presents Women and Islam

ATLANTA – Oglethorpe University is proud to present Women and Islam Thursday, October 18 in Lupton Auditorium (4484 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta 30319) at 7:00 p.m. This contemporary lecture will explore Islamic women, law, literature and history.

Dr. Darlene R. May, visiting associate professor of Arabic at Wake Forest University and adjunct assistant professor of Arabic at Elon University will be on Oglethorpe’s campus to deliver the lecture. This visit is sponsored by the Muslim Student Association, Interfaith Council, Oglethorpe Women’s Network, the Center for Civic Engagement and the office of student affairs. The event is free and open to the public. For more information please contact 404.364.8336.

Inspired by a challenge from Oglethorpe University’s president, Lawrence M. Schall, last year students created three faith-based student organizations in less than a semester. First, about 20 students reactivated the Jewish Student Union. Within a few months, two other organizations, the Catholic and the Muslim Student Associations were reactivated and created, respectively. An example of Oglethorpe students being inspired into action was seen last spring in a crowded residence hall lounge, where almost 50 students from the Catholic, Jewish and Muslim Student Unions gathered for the first Interfaith Council Movie Night. The Jewish students picked the first movie, next the Muslim students, then the Catholic students. The second Interfaith Movie Night drew over 70 students who gathered to share traditional Passover dishes and watch the movie Muhammad: The Legacy of a Prophet.
