Local University Supports Downtown Elementary School
ATLANTA - Oglethorpe University students will volunteer at Ed S. Cook Elementary School’s afterschool and physical education program on March 31 and April 21, from 2:00 until 5:30 p.m. Cook students will then visit the Oglethorpe campus, have lunch with college students and go on a campus tour on April 30, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
These visits are sponsored by Oglethorpe’s Center for Civic Engagement (CCE). The center focuses on four key areas of service: education, environment, health and wellness and homelessness and hunger. Oglethorpe’s Atlanta educational partners are Ed S. Cook Elementary, Charles R. Drew Charter School, PATH Academy and South Atlanta High School of Law and Social Justice. Each of these partnerships has offered unique opportunities for Oglethorpe students to learn about the needs of a community while the younger students learn about the university environment.
CCE volunteers have worked on a variety of programs at Cook Elementary over the past two years. They coordinate the monthly Terrific Test Takers event; staff the annual Fall Festival; provide tutoring help; staff reading programs and help with building maintenance projects and painting. During spring 2007 the center also brought Cook’s 4th and 5th grade classes to Oglethorpe’s campus to see a theatrical production.
Last month Oglethorpe University was named to the U.S. President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for distinguished community service and for exemplary service to disadvantaged youth. This is Oglethorpe’s second year in a row on this prestigious national list. For more information on Oglethorpe University’s Center for Civic Engagement please call 404.504.1978. |
