University President Honored by Hands on Atlanta
ATLANTA– The Hands On Atlanta AmeriCorps program has named Oglethorpe University President Lawrence M. Schall the Outstanding Administrator of the Year. The award is given annually to an administrator that has demonstrated tremendous leadership in the area of civic engagement, volunteering and working with youth.
Dr. Schall was nominated by Valencya Taylor, an AmeriCorps member who has been working for Oglethorpe’s Center for Civic Engagement this year organizing volunteer trips around Atlanta and the southeast.
Dr. Schall was elected 16th president of Oglethorpe University in 2005. Under his leadership, Oglethorpe University opened the Center for Civic Engagement, connecting its students to the city of Atlanta and beyond in volunteer, curricular, civic and cultural projects. He currently serves on the board of the Atlanta Local Education Fund and is vice chair of the board of Project GRAD. He is a member of the Hands On Network Corporate Council and is a member of The Lovett School Board of Trustees. He is also the chair of the higher education committee for the National Center on Volunteering and Service and is an advisory board member for Worthwhile Ventures, an international education microfinance organization.
