Annual University Service Day Serves DeKalb
ATLANTA - Oglethorpe University’s Center for Civic Engagement sponsors the second annual Day of Service on Friday, March 28, from 1:30 until 4:30 p.m. Oglethorpe students, faculty, staff, admitted students andalumni will complete projects at the Dunwoody Nature Center and MedShare International.
At the Dunwoody Nature Center volunteers will remove invasive plant species and cut, chemically treat and plant trees. The Dunwoody Nature Center is a non-profit established by community volunteers in 1990 to develop, improve and preserve 22 acres of DeKalb County's Dunwoody Park as a natural classroom for environmental education.
At MedShare International volunteers will help sort unused medical supplies at the Decatur warehouse. MedShare International,a non-profit focusing on healthcare disparities in the economically developing world takes excess medical goods from United States hospitals, packs them into containers and ships them to other countries. Selling the supplies for about 5% of their U.S.cost, MedShare sends containers to 87 countries.
Earlier this month Oglethorpe University was named to the U.S. President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for distinguished community service and for exemplary service to disadvantaged youth. This is Oglethorpe’s second year in a row on this prestigious national list.
Oglethorpe’s Center for Civic Engagement is an initiative to integrate classroom learning with experiences throughout Atlanta, supporting the community while strengthening the university’s academic offerings. The center works with faculty and students to coordinate service-learning, internships, partnerships and meetings with some of the city’s most influential leaders.
