University Professor Honored by Vulcan Materials Company

ATLANTA – Oglethorpe University’s Christian Y. Benton was awarded the 2008 Vulcan Materials Company Teaching Excellence Award at the university’s commencement ceremony Saturday, May 10.

Director of accounting studies, Benton has taught at Oglethorpe since 1999. He has also served as the director of the university’s Financial Planner Program since 2006. Benton earned a Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Maryland and a Master of Arts in management/business from Webster College and is a Certified Public Accountant in Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina. Benton, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the American Accounting Association, has been instrumental in placing each Oglethorpe University accounting major in a job upon graduation.

“The award was determined by a committee made up of former award recipients, our senior class president and an alumna/staff member. Professor Benton receives very high praise from the students in his classes and teaches a wide variety of accounting courses. He is the faculty advisor to Omicron Delta Kappa, a prominent and active student leadership organization on campus, and to the Student Accounting Society,” said Oglethorpe University Provost William O. Shropshire.
