Oglethorpe Students Continue to Serve Atlanta Community
ATLANTA – On Wednesday, February 6, 22 Oglethorpe University students will sort food donations at the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s product rescue center (732 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. 30318) from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. The volunteer opportunity is sponsored by Oglethorpe’s Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) and is the university’s second service trip to the food bank.
The Center for Civic Engagement is an initiative integrating classroom learning with experiences throughout Atlanta, supporting the community while strengthening the university’s academic offerings. The center works with faculty and students to coordinate service-learning, internships, partnerships and meetings with some of the city’s most influential leaders.
Oglethorpe’s service learning environment grew during on- and off-campus relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, continuing with Alternative Spring and Winter Break trips to New Orleans to assist in the clean-up efforts, partnerships with Cook Elementary School, Drew Charter School and PATH Academy for tutoring, enrichment programs and days of service, clean-up and beautificationat the Dunwoody Nature Center, planting trees with Trees Atlanta and volunteer opportunities through Hands On Atlanta.
