University Library Receives Sentimental Gift

ATLANTA – T he Angela Thirkel Society in San Diego has recently chosen Oglethorpe University to be the recipient of a rare collection of works by the late author Elizabeth Goudge. The Angela Thirkel Society Board of Directors voted that the donation be made to Oglethorpe University Philip Weltner Library because there, the titles would be able to circulate, and would be part of an academic collection where they would be appreciated.

All fourteen titles are out of print and include acclaimed novels The Rosemary Tree, The Dean’s Watch and A City of Bells, as well as nonfiction works such as A Diary of Prayer.

Elizabeth Goudge was born in Wells in 1900 but as a child she moved to Oxford where her father was a Professor of Divinity. She was the author of novels, short stories and children’s books, as well as personal confessions of faith, until her death in 1984. Goudge won the Carnagie Medal for The Little White Horse in 1946, and her novel Green Dolphin Country was made into a film which won the Academy Award for Special Effects in 1948. The works she loved so dearly will be well preserved for generations to come at the Philip Weltner Library at Oglethorpe University.
