University Donates Books to Local Elementary School
ATLANTA– Oglethorpe University’s Philip Weltner Library recently donated 120 children’s books to PATH Academy, a local charter school. Civic Engagement Scholar Larisa Ozeryansky ’11, saw the need for more books at PATH Academy and connected with the library staff at Oglethorpe who had an overflow.
Heather Staniszewski, assistant director of the Center for Civic Engagement at Oglethorpe, said, “Larisa took all the initiative and made the donation happen. She and several other OU students volunteered twice a week at PATH Academy, tutoring science classes and helping students with study skills.” It was Larisa and her friend Matt Tokajer ’11 who delivered the books to a very grateful Path Academy staff.
“We do have a fabulous children’s library here and we continue to collect titles for it,” noted Anne Salter, director of the Philip Weltner Library. “It is especially important to our Master of the Arts in Teaching program. The PATH Academy donation was the result of our weeding the juvenile collection. Titles ranged from beginner readers to novels for intermediate readers. We were happy they found such a wonderful home.”
PATH (Perseverance Accomplishment Triumph and Honor) Academy opened its doors in 2002 with a unique mission. The school strives to create a safe and nurturing environment where immigrant, refugee and local children can develop the knowledge, skills and character that will enable them to thrive at top high schools, colleges and the competitive world beyond. The Oglethorpe Center for Civic Engagement works closely with PATH Academy to aid them in their mission.
