Oglethorpe Confers Honorary Degrees on Warren Jobe, Sen. Johnny Isakson
ATLANTA – Warren Jobe and Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) delivered the commencement addresses and were presented with honorary degrees at Oglethorpe University’s 2009 commencement ceremony last Saturday, May 9. Previous recipients at Oglethorpe commencements have included Franklin D. Roosevelt, Herbert Lehman, Tom J. Watson, T. Woodrow Wilson, and more recently Andrew Young, Anne Rivers Siddons, Billy Payne, Yoel Levi, Zell Miller, S. Truett Cathy, Max Cleland, Miles Brand, and Samuel F. Pickering.
Warren Jobe served as Chairman of the Oglethorpe University Board of Trustees from 1999 to 2005, Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of Georgia Power Company, Senior Vice President of Southern Company, and board member of numerous corporate and community service organizations. In his commencement address, Jobe encouraged the graduating class to “treat people as you want to be treated, be fair, tell the truth, keep your promises… and dream big because you can make a difference.”
Johnny Isakson, former President of Northside Realty, Minority Leader in the Georgia General Assembly, Georgia State Senator, and, since 2005, U.S. Republican Senator, received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, and spoke to the graduating glass, emphasizing “the secrets to living a happy, successful and fulfilling life,” which are: learning, respect, ethics, love, faith, and dreaming.
