The Oglethorpe Writing Center is up and running. We can support any course assignments requiring writing. We can help support Narratives instruction in thesis development, argument, and analysis.

Tutors will rely on your assignment descriptions when working with your students. The more specific your assignment and criteria are, the more helpful we can be. We have received sample papers in the past that instructors have requested we reference, but not show to students. We have also received assignments via email.

Five student tutors with proven skills in academic and creative writing will be available Sunday through Thursday to consult with Oglethorpe students of all levels and across the disciplines on their written assignments at any stage of the writing process. The Center is located in the Academic Success Center on the basement level of the Philip Weltner Library. Please note that there are some hours during the day in which a tutor will not be available.

We request that you strongly encourage, but not require, students to come for help with a specific issue (ESL issues, paragraphing, fragments, citation guidelines, thesis development, academic tone or style, outlining, development and critical reasoning) or for general feedback.

Sending your students to the Writing Center for work on style, grammar, clarity, and organization can allow you to concentrate on content and developing course objectives. The conferences can help students develop strategies for developing their writing skills, by providing an interested and engaged audience with whom to try out ideas. Conferences can help them claim their writing as their own.

The tutors can reinforce (but not supplant) faculty expectations, while providing a non-threatening environment for a discussion of the writing process. Tutors can also guide students to a variety of available resources for improving their academic and professional writing.

Should you have any requests or would like to arrange a tutor’s visit to your classroom, contact tutoring@oglethorpe.edu.

If you have an upcoming assignment and are encouraging students to come to the Writing Center, we would greatly appreciate any information or guidance you can give us. If you could email me (or drop off) a copy of the assignment, style sheets, expectations, I would put the material in our files for the tutors to consult. If you have a take-home exam and would like us to continue aiding students with grammar, style, citation, or ESL issues, we will need to have specific approval from you via email defining what tasks you would like us to address.

You are all always welcome to stop by the Writing Center to see how it works. We welcome your support and feedback.
